The Calcio Storico Fiorentino is an historical game originated in Florence. In the past the name was “Football in Uniform” (Calcio in Costume) because of the players had the original dresses of the era when this game was born. The game was really important. The matches were played for important marriages and when important people went to visit the city, such as the Pope, Cardinals or Rulers.
Calcio Storico: How is born
The “Giuoco del Calcio Fiorentino” have roots from the games played by the Greeks (Sferomachia), played also by the Romans (Harpastum). During the Middle Ages a similar game was player in the streets and squares of Florence, and the first official matches were born in this time.
The most important game was played in the Santa Croce Square the 17th Febraury 1530, during the siege of Florence made by the Emperor Charles V. This game was made to challenge the enemies that were sieging the city. From this day on, to celebrate this day, the matches of Calcio Storico were organized.
Calcio Storico: When is Played
Every year in June for teams from the Florence’s districts made a tournament made by semi-finals and a final the 24th, day of Saint John the Baptist, patron saint of the city. The winning district have the title of “Champion” for one year.
